Recently, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that taxpayers who earn a salary of up to Rs 12 lakh would not be required to pay any income tax.

Basically, there will be zero income tax for earnings up to Rs 12 lakh (meaning Rs 12.75 lakh with a standard deduction of Rs 75,000).

Along with this, there are also some changes in the tax slabs.

While a lot of people have been celebrating this move and considering it a major relief for the middle-class section of the country, Anupam Mittal shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) calling the Rs 12.75 lakh income threshold the new definition of poverty.

In a humourous post, the People Group founder and Shark Tank India judge wrote, “New definition of gareeb => income below 12.75 lacs a year 😜”

Mittal’s post met with numerous responses.

One X user wrote, “Bhai आप kyu मज़ाक uda raheho…”

Another user commented, “Bhai, I kindly request that you consider quitting Shark Tank. Tumhri jeb se 1rs nikalta nahi hai, aur pitchers ka confidence alag se kha jate ho.”

A third individual said, “90% of salaried people are Gareebs'. 🙄”

Criticizing Anupam Mittal’s post for being in poor taste, one user wrote, “Imagine a person working hard to earn Rs. 12 lakh for the family and the government is rebating their tax and then people like you call them Gareeb…”

WILL INDIA BE TAX-FREE?

As per The Times of India, in a follow-up post on X, Anupam Mittal appreciated the Government's efforts by acknowledging that almost 90% of people who pay tax on India have an annual income below Rs 13 lakh.

In his words, “Turns out that almost 90% tax-filers in India have an income below 13 lacs p.a. meaning out of 140 cr people only 1 cr will pay income tax this year effectively making India income-tax free 👍🏼”

In a separate LinkedIn post, Mittal called the budget a “systemic correction” and “not just a tax cut.”

Commending the budget, he wrote, “More disposable income = More consumption = More economic growth. 🚀

You don’t build an economy by making people feel gareeb. You build it by making them wealthier. 😎”
