Mappls introduces live traffic signal timings in Bengaluru
Bengaluru has recently introduced live traffic signal countdowns on the Mappls app, becoming India's first city to navigate live traffic signals.
Live traffic signal countdowns on Mappls
The new feature with real-time updates on signal timings is intended to improve urban mobility and driver decision-making.
"Can you see the live traffic signal timings showing up on Mappls app? As the real traffic signal counts down, you see the same on the map inside the Mappls app. Magical, and helpful :)," Director of MapmyIndia Rohan Verma said in a post on X.
He added, "Live in Bangalore now thanks to @blrcitytraffic Arcadis India, and the work done by team @mappls @MapmyIndia. This is an India first, btw!"
Verma further explained that these and so many more innovations make Mappls, India’s own swadeshi maps & navigation app, beneficial for all Indians.
With the help of live tracking of traffic signals on Mappls, the commuters can see exactly how many seconds are left until the signal changes.
The Bengaluru City Traffic Police, Arcadis India and the tech teams of Mappls have collaborated to make the effort possible in Bengaluru.
The post went viral with thousands of views, with some people asking whether this feature will go live across other cities too.
To this, Verma responded, saying, "We are ready to take it live in all cities and highways - need the traffic authorities to connect with us. It would be wonderful if people asked them to, while our teams reach out in parallel to. And best if they reached out to us too!"
Another user suggested that the next update should be a "pothole tracker". "While showing the distance and route between two points, this tracker gives an option of journey with the least potholes," he added.
Incidentally, Indian Railways will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with MapmyIndia for its homegrown navigation app, Mappls, as announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Railways and Electronics & IT. Mappls will provide various applications for the railways.
