Indian entrepreneur and angel investor Anupam Mittal recently opened up about his initial struggling days on LinkedIn, shedding light on the challenges he faced before achieving success in the tech and venture capital industry. 

Overcoming rejection and adversity

Mittal shared that he had to submit 800 applications and go through 65 interviews before landing his first job in the United States during a recession. Despite facing multiple rejections, he refused to give up on his dreams of working in the tech and VC sector. While watching others secure positions at top-tier companies, Mittal continued to push forward, determined to prove his worth.

Embracing opportunity and growth

When the Y2K era arrived, Mittal recognized the demand for COBOL programming skills and taught himself mainframe coding to secure an entry-level position as a COBOL programmer with Keane.

Although he disliked the job, he persevered and eventually landed a role as a pre-sales consultant at MicroStrategy in Boston. After sensing a potential for growth at the company's headquarters in Washington D.C., Mittal took a leap of faith and reached out directly to the CEO, Michael Saylor.  He requested a role in their new venture and successfully grabbed a position there at Strategy.com.

Achieving success and growth

Mittal's decision to seize opportunities and push beyond his comfort zone paid off, leading to rapid career advancement within MicroStrategy and significant market cap growth for the company. He believes his time in the US not only shaped his professional trajectory but also shaped his personality.
