Since September 2023, around 40 startups from Karnataka have been reaping the benefits of the state government's Global Innovation Alliance – Market Access Programme (GIA-MAP). The initiative, headed by the state Department of Electronics, IT-BT (Information Technology - Biotechnology) has been instrumental in helping these startups tap into international markets with great success.

IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge has disclosed that “GIA-MAP provides startups with direct opportunities to explore the tech ecosystem in partner countries and collaborate with MNCs to expand their businesses.”

Officials have stated that 10 startups each have successfully entered the markets of UAE, Singapore, and Australia, while seven others have made their mark in Belgium. These startups primarily belong to sectors such as deep tech, aerospace and defense, ed-tech, life sciences, med tech, cybersecurity, and various others.

Notable names like DocketRun Tech Private Limited, VividSparks IT Solutions Pvt Ltd, Toutche Electric, Rootskart, RDLTechnologies Pvt. Ltd and Cosmos Bio Private Limited are on the list.

The objective of GIA-MAP

The main objective of the GIA-MAP is to support matured and growth-stage startups in Karnataka in their pursuit of exploring and venturing into prominent startup ecosystems globally. Aligned with the Start-up Policy 2022-2027, this program has received an allocation of Rs 3 crore in the 2023-2024 state budget.

Through the GIA-MAP, startups are not only able to build valuable partnerships but also gain insightful knowledge about regulations and processes required for establishing operations in various countries. The selection criteria for countries include factors like market accessibility, alignment with Karnataka's tech focus, government incentives, funding opportunities, and overall political and economic stability.

The program takes into account whether the startups are sector-specific or sector-agnostic and prioritizes countries that offer welcome packages to facilitate smoother entry.

Reimbursement and support

Selected startups under the GIA-MAP stand to benefit from financial assistance, with the possibility of receiving up to 80 percent reimbursement of actual costs incurred for flights, accommodation, and visa fees.

The allocation of this reimbursement is divided into two halves – the first being disbursed post the delegation visit, while the remaining half is contingent on meeting milestones like stakeholder meetings and progress in market access.

The intended outcomes of this initiative include fostering global expansion for Karnataka startups, connecting them with businesses in partner countries, and providing essential mentorship support.
