ISRO Chairman Dr S Somanath recently said that for every rupee India spent on space, the country got a return of Rs 2.52.

In a conversation with NDTV, Dr S Somanath emphasized that 2024 has been a ‘splendid’ year in terms of the missions ISRO achieved.

He said, “I believe that this year has been a very splendid year for us in terms of the missions that we accomplished and also the future roadmap that we have set for ourselves based on the vision of the Prime Minister. For the very first time in the history of the space programme, we have a vision for the next 25 years announced.”

Government Support and Future Space Projects

The Central Government has approved funding of Rs 31,000 crore for ISRO with a long-term vision for the country’s space explorations.

The country is now planning to establish the Bhartiya Antariksha Station by 2035. This will be India’s own space station. In 2028, a space station module will be launched, which will pave the way for its complete operational deployment by the set year.

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman, Dr S Somanath, ISRO is also aiming to successfully land an astronaut on the moon by 2040. He said that while 2040 will mark the 100th year of India’s independence, it will also mark the first time an Indian will go to the moon with the country’s flag.

In his own words, “...an Indian flag will be flying on the moon with our person going, putting it back, and returning safely.”

Preceding this mission, an entire series of missions in the preparatory phase will also be conducted. This will include the Chandrayaan-4, a lunar sample return mission.

Another important development that has gotten the green light in terms of approval is the use of a reusable, greener, and modular rocket. This will have the capability to support human spaceflight and lunar missions.

Doctor Somanath also added that an exploration mission for Venus has been cleared as well.
