In a recent Bengaluru event, Rohit Kapoor, the CEO of Swiggy Food and Marketplace bashed the modern “hustle culture” expressing concerns over its adverse effects on health and personal well-being.
In a candid interview with Shradha Sharma at TechSparks, Kapoor admitted that some days you need to work till late but that should not be a daily practice.
Who is Rohit Kapoor?
Rohit Kapoor boasts a rich professional journey. He started his career as a management consultant at the prestigious McKinsey & Company in 2000.
Then he excelled as the Senior Strategy & Business Performance Director at Max India Limited in 2012.
After that, he was in the pivotal roles of Executive Director and Board Member at Max Healthcare.
He then moved to OYO performing various roles within the company.
In 2022, he took the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Swiggy Food and Marketplace.
Having worked with the leading brands at top positions, Kapoor revealed hustle culture is needlessly glorified. He explained that while many professionals boast about working late into the night, they do not mention that they start the next workday much later.
Reality of ‘hustle culture’
“Wo jo 3 baje raat ko baithte hai na wo ye nahi batate ki wo 1 baje dopahar ko office ate hai” (Those who say they work till 3 a.m. never mention that they reach the office at 1 p.m. the next day).
The CEO shared that working late into the night at the expense of health and personal relationships is counterproductive.
Kapoor remarked that he has a huge problem with the hustle culture. He suggested people to spend time with their family and loved ones.
He admitted working hard is essential. He confessed nothing in life comes easy and you have to strive for that. “Hard work is needed. I think we need to work d**n hard,” but one should not become “crazy” to the point that they sacrifice their personal life.
