Founder of Grump social media agency, Senain Sawant, shared on Linkedin a recent hiring interview debacle when she was called a "bi**h" by a Gen Z applicant during an online interview that went faulty on the applicant's end due to technical reasons.
Posting the screenshots of the chat, Sawant said, "The younger generation is in clear need of strong guidance, and as a young entrepreneur myself, I am appalled by the audacity of this candidate to think it is okay to call the company founder, or anyone in a hiring position for that matter, a Bi***"
Sawant explained in her post, that the applicant joined the call with the camera off and said the computer was inoperable as there’s some iOS update not allowing video calls.
Sawant asked, 'How do you usually work?' to which the applicant replied that the previous company provided the applicant with a laptop, but if one is needed, I can arrange for one.'
Observing that their "tone was off from the start, Sawant asked the applicant to join at a time when their video could be turned on since she needed to see the applicant she was speaking with during the interview.
The applicant said "Fine" and then ended the call. Throughout the conversation, Sawant felt the tone was off. The audio was fuzzy from the beginning, and it sounded like the applicant was in a noisy environment.
After the session ended, Sawant received direct messages from the applicant to her over WhatsApp. He called her a “b*tch” for speaking with “arrogance” to her.
Social Media Reaction:
Many internet users resonated with Ms Sawant's emotions and expressed sympathy for her LinkedIn post.
One user wrote, "Being verbally abusive is not ok. At the same time, forcing a person to switch on his camera is a privacy violation atleast here in Canada. Why is it necessary to see a person’s face when interviewing online for an executive position? A phone interview will be able to assess the candidate’s experience and competencies just as well."
Another user commented, "The younger generation comes with this entitled attitude, thinking they know better. There's no real way to teach them; only their own experiences will humble them, if they're lucky. It's best not to take these incidents to heart and just move on with your day.
It's sad that you had such an experience."
A third user replied, "This is such a nightmare. Senain Sawant please don't take these things to heart and keep moving forward. More power to you!"
