Central Government Bans ALTBalaji, ULLU, And Others For “Pornographic” And “Sexually Explicit” Content With No Storyline Or Theme

In its latest crackdown on OTT apps, the central government has banned apps like ALTBalaji and ULLU for allegedly hosting obscene and vulgar content.

While authorities have not yet published an official statement, it is being reported that the central government has banned multiple apps and websites for allegedly showing obscene and “pornographic” content.

According to Hindustan Times, there are in total 25 apps and websites that have been banned.

Official sources have said that this list contains names like ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, and Gulab App.

“SERIOUS VIOLATION”

On condition of anonymity, sources have revealed that this ban was a result of content on these apps being found in “serious violation” of Indian laws.

Officials alleged that platforms like ALTBalaji and ULLU release content that contains “sexual innuendos” and scenes that have “sexually explicit acts involving nudity.” The visuals were described as being pornographic in nature.

The material created and shown to the audience often lacks any substantial storyline, theme, or social message and instead relies on “obscene and vulgar” visuals.

SEXUALLY INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT

According to sources in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the officials were also concerned about sexual content being shown on these apps and websites in inappropriate contexts.

These contexts included “family relationships and other sensitive settings,” they said.

PAST LEGAL TROUBLES

This is not the first instance of these platforms being called out legally.

Back in May 2025, OTT platform ULLU faced widespread backlash after a scene from one of its web series went viral, drawing criticism for its reportedly vulgar content. The National Commission for Women (NCW) had warned of regulatory action and spoken against the kind of portrayal of women the app was engaging in.
