In a conversation with Eventbrite CEO Julia Hartz, Microsoft’s Bill Gates admitted that the giant’s failure to take over the smartphone market was one of his biggest mistakes of all time.

According to Moneycontrol, Gates said that it was “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

He also acknowledged that “his greatest mistake” had come at a heavy cost to Microsoft. It was a loss of $400 billion that the tech company had to suffer after it lost the market to Android.

According to Bill Gates, “mismanagement” was the reason that Microsoft lost out on the possibility of entering the phone market and becoming what Android is today.

He also added that if Microsoft had entered at the right time, the company would've won against Apple.

Gates emphasized that it was “a natural thing for Microsoft to win” against Apple.

ANDROID CO-FOUNDER RESPONDS

After the businessman’s statement, Android co-founder, Rich Miner, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his views on the matter.

He wrote that Gates is more responsible for losing the $400 billion than he realized.

Rich Miner stated that he had helped in creating Android and also prevented Microsoft from taking it over and gaining complete monopoly in it.

He alleged that Microsoft would've controlled phones just like computers and blocked innovation from happening.

In his words on X, Miner wrote, “I literally helped create Android to prevent Microsoft from controlling the phone the way they did the PC - stifling innovation. So it's always funny for me to hear Gates whine about losing mobile to Android.”

He said that users could retweet his post if they wanted him to share Android’s original pitch desk with them.

Miner also opened up on his worries in the past about Microsoft controlling the mobile market like the company did with personal computers. He said that he always wanted something “more open.”

He also added in his post, “I helped Orange launch the first Windows Mobile phone in 2002, the SPV. I worried MSFT might end up controlling mobile like they did the PC, I wanted something more open. So, sorry Bill, you're more responsible for losing the $400B than you realise.”
