OpenAI launched a ChatGPT Health tab on Wednesday that answers health-related questions and allows users to upload medical records and connect wellness apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal.

According to the company, more than 230 million people globally ask health and wellness-related questions on ChatGPT every week.

What is ChatGPT Health?

The new feature is a separate, sandboxed space within ChatGPT where users can ask health and wellness questions and connect their medical records and fitness or nutrition apps.

ChatGPT Health can be used for understanding recent test results, preparing for doctor appointments, advice on diet and workout routines, or for evaluating tradeoffs between different insurance options based on individual healthcare patterns.

Can ChatGPT Health diagnose illnesses or replace doctors?

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, said that the tool is meant to support, not replace, clinicians. “AI doesn’t replace medical care, but it can play an important role in helping people navigate a complicated healthcare system,” she said, adding that ChatGPT can aptly synthesise large amounts of information and explain it clearly.

What kind of health data can users connect to?

According to OpenAI, users can choose to connect:

  • Electronic medical records (currently US-only)

  • Apple Health (iOS only)

  • Wellness apps such as MyFitnessPal, Peloton, Weight Watchers, Function, AllTrails and Instacart

The company claims that this allows ChatGPT to reference lab results, visit summaries, sleep patterns, activity levels and diet logs, if users explicitly authorise access.

For medical records, OpenAI has partnered with b.well, a US-based digital health company that already connects data from more than 2.2 million healthcare providers.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Health operates as a separate space with its own chat history, memory and files, and has enhanced privacy to protect sensitive data.

OpenAI plans to expand access and make ChatGPT Health available to all users on the web and iOS in the coming weeks.

Initially, it is providing access to a small group of early users with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as an experiment.
