Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, was seen riding in a flex-fuel Toyota vehicle to promote ethanol-fueled vehicles.
Nitin Gadkari pushes Bio-Ethanol fuelled cars
The Minister said the car was operating on 100 per cent ethanol, which is far more economical compared to petrol-powered vehicles.
Talking to journalists, he said, "It is priced at Rs 65 per litre, while petrol is Rs 120 per litre. The car, while in use, creates 60 percent of electricity. So, effectively, the actual cost of a flex-fuel car running on ethanol will cost a person around Rs 25 per litre."
Gadkari further said, "Farmers produce ethanol by using broken rice, corn, sugarcane juice, stubble, and other things. It does not create pollution at all. This is green fuel, and we import fossil fuels from outside. The farmers of our country will benefit from this."
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) demonstrated a working prototype of the Hyundai Creta Flex Fuel at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
It said ethanol-run vehicles reduce net carbon emissions while offering improved power and torque, potentially lower ownership costs through government incentives.
India's ethanol plants
Currently, India has around 550 ethanol plants in operation, with 20 per cent ethanol already blended with petrol nationwide, Gadkari shared.
He added that several major two-wheeler manufacturers have launched models compatible with 100 per cent ethanol.
An ethanol-CNG tractor is also being introduced, and "all major automakers are going to produce vehicles fitted with flex engines in the times to come," Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
Incidentally, Indian Oil is operating around 400 ethanol pumps in the country.
