Anupam Mittal
Shark Tank India’s popular judge Anupam Mittal said that Gen Z employees should not be “shamed” for switching jobs.
Anupam Mittal says it is okay to switch jobs early in one's career
“Let’s stop shaming Genz for switching jobs,” he wrote on LinkedIn.
“I see a lot of ‘career gurus’ shaming 22-year-olds for switching jobs every year,” he added.
The Shaadi.com Founder said that the early 20s is the correct time to explore career paths. He reasoned that it is the ideal time to change jobs to find the right one.
“Early in our career, we’re discovering our passion,” Mittal said. “We’re ‘dating’ industries, roles & cultures to find what vibes.”
He further said that if you don’t feel like working a particular job, it is wise to “move” without feeling bad. However, the Shark Tank India judge cautioned that once you find the “path”, you have to “stop bouncing & start consolidating”.
He disclosed that when he hires senior leadership roles in his company, he rejects any resume that doesn't have at least one 4–5 year stint. Mittal even shared the reason for rejecting such candidates.
“Because, usually, one cannot see the consequences of their own decisions in 12 months,” he said.
He explained that in the first year, an employee learns, and in the second, he starts executing. But from the third year, he starts dealing with the “mess” from the previous year and starts “scaling” the wins.
The Shark Tank India judge said that the age of 21 - 24 is the time for exploring opportunities. But if you are 25+, it is wise to stick with a company and commit for at least four years.
According to Anupam Mittal, it takes one year to understand a job but three to five years to understand an industry.
“If you want to be a Founder or a CEO, you need to prove you can stay in the kitchen when it gets hot,” he said while concluding the post.
