Rapido driver
A recent viral post has reignited conversations around gig work, urban loneliness, and Bengaluru’s work culture.
A techie identified as Abhinav on the social media platform X has shared an anecdote about a surprising late-night commute.
“My rapido driver is a sales manager in phonepe who has a flat in Bengaluru Works at office during the day,” he wrote. “And drives rapido at night,” he added.
In his post, the Bengaluru man claimed that his Rapido bike taxi driver was not a typical gig worker but a sales manager at PhonePe, who owns a flat in Bengaluru, works a full-time corporate job during the day, and rides as a Rapido captain at night.
“Bengaluru is so crazy bro,” Abhinav wrote, sharing how the driver balances an office role by day and bike taxi rides after work.

Netizens react
As the post gained traction, netizens started debating why someone holding a senior corporate position would choose to take up gig work in their spare time.
Some users questioned whether such work choices take opportunities away from full-time drivers who rely entirely on platform-based earnings.
“Never met someone like that in blr but have heard so many stories like that,” commented a user.
“How much does a Sales Manager at Phonepe with 10 yrs of work exp earn?” said another.
An individual wrote: “It's the other way around. Sales Manager of Phonepe is working as Rapido Captain for just some "extra" petty bucks & jeopardising the livelihood of actual drivers who don't know anything except driving.”
“This is very normal outside India,” said a user. “Uber can be driven by anyone there. So people switch on Uber post office hours and pick up rides on their way back home lol”
