Andhra Pradesh is set to host India’s first and the world’s largest green ammonia project at Kakinada, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. Developed by AM Green, the project will convert an existing ammonia-urea facility into a 1.5 million tonnes per annum green ammonia complex: one of India’s most significant industrial revival initiatives to date.

The project will cross a major construction milestone with its first large-scale equipment erection ceremony on Saturday, to be attended by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan.

$10 Billion Integrated Clean Energy Investment

With an investment of close to $10 billion in all, the Kakinada project is among the largest clean-energy deals in India. It is configured as a fully integrated system: 7.5 GW of solar and wind capacity, 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity, and 2 GW of round-the-clock renewable power supported with pumped hydro storage.

A key component of this is a pumped hydro facility at Pinnapuram in Andhra Pradesh-a first-of-its-kind project in the country, guaranteeing seamless, round-the-clock renewable energy for large-scale industrial processes.

Employment Generation and Industrial Revival

It will create employment during its construction phase of up to 8,000 people and immense employment of highly skilled personnel during its operations. Further employment opportunities will arise from the generation of renewable power, logistics, storage, and port services. This will cement Andhra Pradesh as a clean manufacturing and exporting destination.

Export Markets and Global Offtake Agreements

However, Minister for ITE&C & HRD Nara Lokesh stated that the project enables India to become a Green Energy exporter in the form of Green Ammonia to international markets such as Germany, Japan, & Singapore. In a first for India’s Green Energy industry, AM Green has secured long-term off-take agreements with a German utility company called Uniper and is in advanced negotiations with primary buyers in Japan & Singapore.

Green ammonia produced from Kakinada will be employed worldwide as a clean maritime fuel, for electricity production, and as a carrier for green hydrogen.

Phased Commissioning Through 2030

The project will be commissioned in phases-0.5 million tonnes per annum by 2027, expanding to 1 million tonnes by 2028, and reaching full capacity by 2030. Port-based export infrastructure shall be developed to cater to international markets.

This aligns with the Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, articulated by Andhra Pradesh, and has been backed by global investors like Petronas, GIC, and ADIA. AM Green is also setting up a 2 GW electrolyser manufacturing unit with an investment of ₹2,000 crore, strengthening India’s clean-energy manufacturing ecosystem.
