When Madhusmita Choudhury completed her MBA and was almost about to start her career in human resources, she got married. At her new house, she often saw her husband working on embedded systems in automotive touchscreens – and the whole setup intrigued her to no end.

She would casually ask him the end goal of his projects, and he would tell her that most electronic machines literally depend on whether the embedded systems are configured correctly. Their key functions run smoothly when a series of internal processes are in alignment.

Soon, Madhusmita started learning embedded systems through the Internet. She tells Startup Pedia, “I have a pure HR background. I never knew I’d be interested in such hardcore engineering, but turns out life has its own way of surprising you.”

For the uninitiated, embedded systems are a group of specialised computer systems that are designed to perform a specific task. This task is mostly functional in real-time.

Embedded systems are widely used in cars, consumer electronics like mobile phones and laptops, and robots.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Madhusmita finally began digging her fingers deep into embedded system technology and how it was a key function in automotive, robotics, and mobile phones. But she realised that this was only surface-level knowledge that she was gathering.

Without real-life implementation, it was as good as nothing.

She mentioned this to a neighbour who said their son was also interested in the same but didn’t want to travel too far to get enrolled in a training institution.

This was Madhusmita’s chance to start something of her own. She says, “I felt like things were falling into place. I took out my savings of Rs 50,000, posted a job online for an embedded software teacher, and invited her to my place.”

This was how PiEST Systems began in 2020—a small venture that wanted to promote embedded learning.

With time, more students started flocking into Madhusmita’s house, and she knew she had to expand the startup.

“It was clear that there was an urgent need for practical skills in the embedded software and hardware domain. I believed that PiEST Systems was equipped to provide for it,” Madhusmita adds.

PiEST Systems was soon formalised, more expert teachers and professors were hired, and a classroom was set up. Eventually, the edtech startup started having online as well as offline training modules for anyone interested.

In the first year, the humble edtech startup clocked a revenue of Rs 5 lakhs.

Fast-forward four years, and in 2024, PiEST Systems has become one of the leading training institutes for embedded systems in India.

PiEST Systems is not your regular edtech startup that focuses on the defined curriculum, completes it and bids you goodbye.

It is an end-to-end comprehensive system that provides job-based training as well as skill-based training.

Madhusmita explains, “A lot of students simply want to learn enough to land a job. They mention their requirements very specifically and we put them in a module that trains them for technical interviews and knowledge in the embedded space.”

“Others are in for a longer game and want to develop in-depth skills in embedded systems, both software and hardware. For them, there is a separate training module,” she adds.

The key offerings of the edtech include:

  1. Training programs that cover extensive topics like embedded systems architecture, programming languages, IoT, mobility, Android, software development tools, and hardware design.

  2. Programs with a significant element of hands-on experience in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems.

  3. Programs that keep up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in the field of embedded systems.

  4. The training faculty consists of professionals who have rich experience in developing embedded systems. They meet the world-class standard in teaching.

  5. Every student is regularly given practical assignments and projects to work on. This directly tests whether they’ve acquired in-depth knowledge, helps identify gaps, and allows them to work on bridging them.

Since embedded systems are used in almost every machine we operate in our daily lives, the demand for engineers who are trained in developing and testing these systems has also increased.

PiEST Systems ensures that its students find the job best suited to their skills.

The bootstrapped edtech startup has enrolled more than 5,000 students across the country and 2000+ abroad, with 96% of them landing high-paying jobs in multinational companies like Mercedes Benz, Robot BOSCH, Continental, KPIT, L&T, Veoneer, Harman, Volvo India, TCS, TATA Elxsi, Elektrobit, and APTIV.

In FY24, PiEST Systems clocked a revenue of Rupees 60 lakhs. For FY25, it is projecting an annual revenue of Rs 1 crore.

NEXT ON THE CHARTS

PiEST Systems is now loaded with expert professionals in the embedded software and hardware field. The next step for them is to focus on research and development, contribute to the embedded system’s field, and innovate a utility product or service from scratch.

The startup has started tying up with companies and offering services in the domains of embedded systems, IoT, automotive, robotics, and mobility.

Founder Madhusmita Choudhury signs off by saying, “We are equipped to help companies in the domains of robotics, tech consulting, and automotive. The current gap that we’re looking to solve is the lack of technological knowledge that a lot of startup founders, companies, and organisations grapple with. They’ve designed a product but need external tech expertise to fine-tune it and make it ready to release in the market. That is exactly where PiEST Systems will come in.”
