Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated the UDAN Yatri Cafe at Chennai Airport on Thursday.
Air travel made accessible & affordable
It is a government initiative to make air travel more accessible and affordable for common citizens. The cafe located in the pre-check area of the TI domestic terminal offers a cup of tea for just Rs 10, a water bottle for Rs 10, samosas for Rs 20, and coffee for Rs 20.
First launched at Kolkata Airport in December last year, the UDAN Yatri Cafe initiative has plans to open doors at Delhi Airport shortly and then nationwide.
The cafe is designed to offer basic refreshments hygienically and cost-effectively while maintaining good quality.
Speaking to the media, Naidu shared that the UDAN Yatri Cafe is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of inclusive air travel to make flying more affordable and accessible to all.
When asked about the near-monopoly in India's airline sector, the Aviation Minister replied that the government wanted more airline operators in the country but the volatile nature of the business and a requirement for massive investment makes it a challenge.
However, he added that any airline wanting to enter the aviation market would be supported by the government as per norms.
