Backstory & Context

His backstory is that after visiting Kolkata in 2004 and again in 2005, Angus Denoon fell in love with the street food in the city and this was when he began his journey of learning the art of making street food from local vendors themselves and after years and months of practicing and perfecting it, Denoon took Kolkata's street food, specifically the chaat items which he loved and learned, to the streets of London.

Indian Chaat

Chaat in India is a staple and an evening snack for most Indians and is basically served on roadside stalls in India. There are various recipes, and some of them include the famous pani puri or the gol gappa, or the fried potato.

Among this huge family of Indian snacks is jhalmuri, a puffed rice snack with a blend of spices and masala chutney, usually served in paper cones.

Jhalmuri in London

In various videos shared by food bloggers, Angus Denoon is seen preparing Jhalmuri for local vendors. Just like local vendors, he stores the ingredients in plastic bottles, mugs, and steel containers as well.

His Jhalmuri stall is also fascinatingly dressed up like any Kolkata stall vendor, with colourful flowers and signboards, with one of them reading ‘Everybody Love Love Jhalmuri Express.’

Videos shared by influencers also show various Londoners trying this Jhal Muri and calling it light and vegan, wheat-free, and their go-to snack.
