The clash between Tesla chief Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman has intensified.
A group of investors led by Elon Musk have offered to buy the non-profit that controls the artificial intelligence company.
The unsolicited bid is for $97.4 billion. While submitting it, Elon Musk’s lawyer stated that Musk had the intention to restore OpenAI to what it once was—a non-profit research lab.
According to Perspective Media, Sam Altman is considering a restructuring of OpenAI and converting it into a hundred percent for-profit entity. The firm believes that this restructuring is important so that funds can be obtained to develop world-class artificial intelligence models.
As per the Hindustan Times, Musk wishes to restore OpenAI to becoming “the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was.”

SAM ALTMAN’S RESPONSE
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sam Altman responded to the bid with a post. He took a dig at how Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion and made it private. The social media platform has since seen a reduction in valuation.
The OpenAI CEO wrote, “No thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
ELON MUSK CALLS SAM ALTMAN A ‘SCAM’
Responding to Sam Altman’s post on X, the Tesla chief wrote “Swindler” in the comment section.
Next, he uploaded a video of Sam Altman saying “no” when he was asked if he makes a lot of money. Musk titled the video with the caption, “Scam Altman.”
HISTORY OF ELON MUSK AND SAM ALTMAN’S CLASH
This is not the first time that Elon Musk and Sam Altman have had a clash.
It all began when Musk initially co-founded OpenAI and later turned into a critic of the artificial intelligence company. Over the years, he alleged that Sam Altman gave priority to earning profits over the ethical development of artificial intelligence.
In 2023, Elon Musk launched his own AI startup called xAI and became OpenAI’s competitor. Later in 2024, Musk sued OpenAI for its connection to Microsoft.
In 2025, Donald Trump praised Sam Altman’s leadership qualities and announced a $500 billion artificial intelligence project called Stargate in collaboration with him.
However, Elon Musk called the project financially dubious and criticized Altman.
