Chinese Scientist develop medical glue
Fixing a broken bone often means surgery, metal plates, and a long recovery.
But scientists in China believe they may have found a simpler way. Their new invention, a medical glue called Bone-02, can join fractured bones in just three minutes.
Bone-02 – A medical glue inspired by nature
The team behind Bone-02, led by Dr. Lin Xianfeng at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, looked to marine life for answers. Oysters thrive in turbulent seas, yet remain firmly attached to surfaces.
Mimicking this natural adhesion, researchers developed a glue that bonds securely even in blood-rich surgical conditions.
Unlike traditional bone cements, Bone-02 is bioabsorbable, which means it gradually dissolves as the bone heals, sparing patients from additional surgery to remove hardware.
A Promising Trial
To test its effectiveness, scientists applied Bone-02 in clinical settings involving more than 150 patients. Results revealed that glued joints could withstand a bonding force of over 400 pounds.
The material also displayed strong resistance to sliding and compression, making it comparable to metal plates used in fracture repair.
More importantly, early findings suggest lower risks of infection and tissue rejection compared to past adhesives like epoxy resins and acrylates, which often failed due to poor compatibility.
While more studies are needed before Bone-02 becomes widely available, its potential is clear. A fracture that once required metal screws and lengthy recovery could soon be treated with a quick, absorbable adhesive.
If larger trials confirm these early results, Bone-02 may mark the beginning of a new era in bone repair, offering safer and faster healing for patients worldwide.
