A recent survey conducted by Santander UK has shed light on a significant shift in the career aspirations of Generation Z.
The survey revealed that young people belonging to Gen Z increasingly prioritise entrepreneurship over traditional 9-to-5 jobs, with a strong desire to "be their own boss."
This trend signals a departure from the long-standing norm of pursuing stable careers with established companies as more and more Gen Z individuals seek to carve out their path in the business world.
Embracing Entrepreneurship in the Digital Age
One of the key findings of the survey was the high level of confidence exhibited by Gen Z respondents in their ability to start and run successful businesses.
In fact, a staggering 77 percent of those surveyed expressed belief in their entrepreneurial skills, with 39 percent even stating that they could manage their business entirely through their smartphones. This reliance on digital tools and platforms highlights the generation's affinity for technology and its integral role in modern business operations.
Leveraging Digital Advantage for Entrepreneurial Success
The survey also explored the perceived advantages that Gen Z and millennials have in the realm of entrepreneurship, particularly in comparison to older generations such as Gen X and Baby Boomers. Half of the respondents agreed that growing up in the digital age conferred a unique advantage to younger individuals, as they have been exposed to technological innovations from an early age.
This contrasts with older generations, many of whom felt that societal pressures to follow traditional paths hindered their entrepreneurial aspirations.
Breaking Barriers to Entrepreneurial Success
While the rise of entrepreneurship among Gen Z is undeniable, Santander UK CEO Mike Regnier emphasised that age should not be a limiting factor in pursuing entrepreneurial endeavours. According to Regnier, the fundamental qualities for success in business—such as passion, curiosity, and the desire to create something meaningful—are not bound by age.
The surge in applications for Santander's entrepreneurial awards further underscores the growing interest in entrepreneurship among young individuals. This year alone, over 850 businesses applied for the awards, with Gen Z entrepreneurs comprising a significant portion of the applicants.
